In the early 1900’s

Our Ministry

Our History

Jerusalem Chapel’s origins date back to 1853 when it was one of several churches included in a circuit helping those in and around Augusta County . The original church structure was built sometime around 1900.  Two additions were added – one in the 1950’s and one in the 1970’s which provided additional space for classrooms, nursery and indoor plumbing. These early structures were destroyed by fire, however, in May of 2006 due to an electrical malfunction in the “old” sanctuary.

The current church was built in two sections.  In 1990, the part of the church which houses our sanctuary, fellowship hall, kitchen, bathrooms and offices was built as an addition to the “old church.”  After the fire, the Christian Education Building was constructed on the same site as the original church.  This building houses many classrooms on the upper and lower levels, the church nursery, our church library, additional bathrooms and staff offices.  While the church facility is used for a wide variety of church-sponsored events and community events, the true ministry happens as we reach out to our community with the love of Christ. In 2013, we celebrated 160 years of ministry, and in the fall of 2017 we “re-dedicated” our sanctuary following a complete upgrade. We are grateful for the many lives God has touched through the ministry of the Jerusalem Chapel family.

Serving Today

Over the years, many pastors have served the fellowship of Jerusalem Chapel, and we are pleased to introduce you to our current pastoral and leadership staff.

Pastor Denny Sites is our Senior Pastor. He has served as our Senior Pastor since 1984. He is married to Annette and has three grown daughters and seven grandchildren. When not working Pastor Denny loves to hunt, hike and spend time with family. He also loves sharing the hope of Christ with those in our church family, in our community and beyond.
Pastor Dave Dakin has served as our Associate Pastor since August 2015. He was ordained as an elder in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ last July (2017) which was a milestone in his journey to one day serve a church as a senior or lead pastor. On Sunday, April 29, Pastor Dave shared an announcement with the church family that as of April 27 he had been officially appointed, by Bishop Todd Fetters, to serve as the Lead Pastor at HomeFront UB Church in Grandville, Michigan. Dave, Jen and the girl’s last Sunday at Jerusalem Chapel will be on June 3.  We plan to take time to “send them off well” and with our blessings on that Sunday morning and hope you can join us!
*Note: For those who are interested in learning more about how this transition process took place, please feel free to contact Pastor Dave, Pastor Denny or a Personnel Relations Committee member as all were a praying part of this process.
Brandy Lyle is our Music & Worship Director. Brandy grew up in our church and has served in the music ministry for years – even when a child in our Christmas Musicals and other special events. As an adult, she has faithfully served on our Worship Team over the years and is doing a great job now as our Director.

Those in leadership constantly strive to find effective ways to lead the congregation of Jerusalem Chapel as well as finding creative ways to touch the lives of individuals within our community. One of our goals as leaders is to grow in our spiritual walk personally and then to reach out to others with the love of Christ in practical ways.
